Crossword Genius

Food here may be taken back to the lab (5,3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

doggy bag

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'the lab' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe you can see a link between them that I can't see?

'food here may be taken back' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'food' could be 'dog' (dog food is a kind of food) and 'dog' is present in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'to' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for doggy bag that I've seen before include "Container for what you can't eat when dining out" , "In which to take restaurant leftovers home" , "Party leftover container" , "It's for when one orders too much when eating out" , "Leftover food carrier" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
