Crossword Genius

French food borne by female messenger (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

gabriel

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'messenger' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'french food borne by female' is the wordplay.
'french food' becomes 'brie' (Brie is an example. I am not sure about the 'french' bit.).
'borne by' is an insertion indicator (to bear can mean to carry).
'female' becomes 'gal' (gal is a kind of female).
'brie' placed into 'gal' is 'GABRIEL'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for gabriel that I've seen before include "Dante - Rossetti, nineteenth century English poet/painter" , "Chief guard of Paradise" , "Archangel who plays the trumpet" , "Archangel and messenger of God" , "Angel of Annunciation" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
