Crossword Genius

Game of golf with par broken around bottom of course (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

leapfrog

'game' is the definition.
(I know that leapfrog is a type of child\\u0027s game)

'golf with par broken around bottom of course' is the wordplay.
'with' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'broken' indicates an anagram.
'around' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'bottom of' says to take the final letters.
The last letter of 'course' is 'e'.
'golf' put after 'par' is 'pargolf'.
'pargolf' is an anagram of 'lapfrog'.
'lapfrog' enclosing 'e' is 'LEAPFROG'.

'of' is the link.

(Other definitions for leapfrog that I've seen before include "Child's game of jumping over other children" , "Vaulting game" , "bound over" , "Jump over" , "Advance by jumps" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
