I believe the answer is:

cribbage

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'game' is the definition.
(cribbage is a card game)

'writer heading off to purchase container' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'writer' could be 'i' (the person who is writing these clues) and 'i' is found in the answer.
'container' could be 'bag' (bag is a kind of container) and 'bag' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for cribbage that I've seen before include "Card game scored with pegs" , "Card game for two to four players" , "activity for couple sitting at table" , "Card-game" , "SPORT/GAME" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
