Gamely implying lawn is inferior? (4,6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

real tennis

'inferior?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot understand how one could define the other.

'gamely implying lawn is' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'is' is found in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Other definitions for real tennis that I've seen before include "Game played in court" , "Early form of Wimbledon's game" , "Old sport" , "In which court member served" , "ancient game" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
