Crossword Genius

Gin that is a form of bottled spirits (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

genii

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'bottled spirits' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'gin that is a form' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'is' could be 'ii' (more than one I) and 'ii' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'gen' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'of' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for genii that I've seen before include "bottled spirits" , "Spirits that could grant wishes" , "Guiding spirits" , "Spirits such as Aladdin's" , "masterminds" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
