Glance over inside of private letter? (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

innkeeper

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'letter?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how one could define the other.

'glance over inside of private' is the wordplay.
'glance' becomes 'peek' (I've seen this in another clue).
'over' is a reversal indicator.
'inside' is an insertion indicator.
'of private' becomes 'inner' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should believe this answer much more).
'peek' in reverse letter order is 'keep'.
'keep' going inside 'inner' is 'INNKEEPER'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for innkeeper that I've seen before include "Pub runner" , "Accommodating type" , "For example, Mistress Quickly" , "local manager" , "Pub landlord" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
