Crossword Genius

Go back, darlings! (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

step

'go' is the definition.
(I know that step is a type of go)

'back darlings' is the wordplay.
'back' says the letters should be written backwards.
'darlings' becomes 'pets' ('pet' can be a synonym of 'darling').
'pets' back-to-front is 'STEP'.

(Other definitions for step that I've seen before include "Dance move" , "Abrupt change; pace" , "Footfall" , "some progress" , "Pace; foothold" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
