Good routes for long-distance drivers (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

fairways

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'long-distance drivers' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are plural nouns, I don't understand how they can define each other.

'good routes' is the wordplay.
'good' becomes 'fair' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'routes' becomes 'ways' (I've seen this in another clue).
'fair'+'ways'='FAIRWAYS'

'for' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for fairways that I've seen before include "A golfer drives down these spaces" , "Golfers drive the ball down these" , "Grassy strips between tee and green" , "Areas between tees and greens" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail and The Guardian.
