Graduate going up and down for Swedish singers (4)
I believe the answer is:
abba
'swedish singers' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'graduate going up and down' is the wordplay.
'graduate' becomes 'BA' (someone with a Bachelor of Arts degree).
'going up' says the letters should be written in reverse (in a down clue, the letters are written upwards).
'and' says to put letters next to each other.
'down' becomes 'ba' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'ba' backwards is 'ab'.
'ab'+'ba'='ABBA'
'for' is the link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for abba that I've seen before include "rhymes in Petrarchan sonnet" , "Palindromic 70s pop group" , "Coptic bishop's title; Swedish pop group" , "rhyme scheme" , "Eurovision prizewinning Swedish pop group" .)
