High points of German prose? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

umlaut

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This might be a double definition.

'high' is the first definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how they can define each other.

'points of german prose?' is the second definition.
The definition and answer can be both related to communication as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe there's a link between them I don't understand?

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for umlaut that I've seen before include "Mark over vowel in German to indicate change in pronunciation" , "Diacritical sign" , "In German, written mark indicating change in vowel pronunciation" , "German mark over a vowel, consisting of two dots" , "Germanic accent mark" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
