Crossword Genius

Honoured newspaperman after art deco edition (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

decorated

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'honoured newspaperman' is the definition.
'decorated' can be an answer for 'honoured' (decorated can mean given awards or honours). I am not sure about the 'newspaperman' bit.

'art deco edition' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
an anagram of 'art' is 'rat' which is located in the answer.
an anagram of 'deco' is 'coed' which is located in the remaining letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'after' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for decorated that I've seen before include "Adorned, bedecked" , "Gothic style following 6 8" , "Awarded medal(s)" , "like a warrior?" , "Wallpapered" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
