I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'barbecue' is the definition.
(Japanese cooking device)

'hotel mysteriously bank on greek character doing the work of a small' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'hotel' could be 'h' (phonetic alphabet: alpha, bravo, charlie etc.) and 'h' is present in the answer.
'character' could be 'chi' (chi is a kind of letter of the alphabet) and 'chi' is present in the answer.
'a' is found in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for hibachi that I've seen before include "Japanese portable barbecue" , "Purpose" , "Japanese brazier used for outdoor cooking" , "Japanese-style portable grill" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times.
