Humiliation it is for a rider to take a toss? (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

comedown

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'humiliation' is the definition.
(I know that comedown is a type of humiliation)

'it is for a rider to take a toss?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'it' could be 'e' ('e' can mean 'electronic' which is similar to 'IT') and 'e' is found within the answer.
'take' could be 'do' ('To take' a course is 'to do' a course) and 'do' is found within the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for comedown that I've seen before include "Descent to a lower status" , "Loss of position or status" , "Feeling of disappointment" , "Anticlimax" , "Decrease" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
