Impaler going round and picking up pointers (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

spit

'impaler going round' is the definition.
(as in a rotating spit holding bits of meat)

'picking up pointers' is the wordplay.
'picking up' says the letters should be written backwards.
'pointers' becomes 'tips' (pointer can mean a tip or suggestion).
'tips' written backwards gives 'SPIT'.

'and' is the link.

(Other definitions for spit that I've seen before include "Expectorate into pits" , "Large skewer-like rod" , "23-ing implement" , "A spade's depth, in earth" , "Rotisserie" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
