In the position of draw; shot! (7)
I believe the answer is:
attempt
'shot' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'in the position of draw' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'the' could be 't' (the is pronounced as a 't' sound in some dialects) and 't' is found in the answer.
'draw' could be 'tempt' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'tempt' is found in the answer.
A single letter 'a' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for attempt that I've seen before include "Stab" , "bash" , "Try, endeavour" , "Have a crack" , "Effort; go" .)
