Insult batsman Bob? (6)
I believe the answer is:
sledge
'insult batsman' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how one could define the other.
'bob?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'bob?' could be 's' (abbreviation for shilling - 'bob' before 1971) and 's' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'ledge' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for sledge that I've seen before include "Snow vehicle or heavy hammer" , "Toboggan" , "Sleigh" , "In the field, abuse" , "In Canada train" .)
