Crossword Genius

Jack left out from stirring American dance (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

jive

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'stirring american dance' is the definition.
'jive' can be an answer for 'dance' (I've seen this before). I'm unsure of the 'stirring american' bit.

'jack left out from' is the wordplay.
'jack' becomes 'j' (playing card abbreviation).
'left out' becomes 'iv' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'from' becomes 'e' (I've seen this in other clues).
'j'+'iv'+'e'='JIVE'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for jive that I've seen before include "Fast American dance" , "Swing music; dance" , "Jerky, jazz dance of the 1950s" , "Deceptive talk" , "Jerky dance of the 1940s and 1950s" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
