Crossword Genius

Knife found in dried up sea is kept for the record (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

archival

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'record' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are adjectives, I cannot see how they can define each other.

'knife found in dried up sea is kept' is the wordplay.
'knife' becomes 'chiv' (I've seen this before).
'found in dried up sea' becomes 'aral' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'is kept' is an insertion indicator.
'chiv' put inside 'aral' is 'ARCHIVAL'.

'for the' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for archival that I've seen before include "records?" , "Record-keeping" , "describing record collection" , "Like recordings" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
