Knock a Scot leaving chain stores (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

shrine

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This could be a double definition.

'knock a scot' is the first definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how they can define each other.

'chain stores' is the second definition.
The answer and definition can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe there's an association between them I don't understand?

'leaving' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for shrine that I've seen before include "Sanctuary" , "Sacred place to worship at" , "Holy site of relics etc" , "Tomb or monument of a saint" , "Hallowed place associated with a sacred thing or person" .)

I've seen this clue in the Irish Times and the Irish Times (Crosaire).
