Laid odds (only evens) against increases (4,2)
I believe the answer is:
adds to
'increases' is the definition.
(adding to is a kind of increasing)
'laid odds only evens against' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'against' could be 'to' (as in a lean-to, building leaning against anothe) and 'to' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'adds' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
