Crossword Genius

Land where the bridge crosses the line (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

spain

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'land' is the definition.
(I know that Spain is European country)

'the bridge crosses the line' is the wordplay.
'the bridge' becomes 'span' ('span' can be a synonym of 'bridge').
'crosses' becomes 'i' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'the line' is an insertion indicator.
'span' placed around 'i' is 'SPAIN'.

'where' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for spain that I've seen before include "Take pains to go there" , "Catholic country" , "Country bordering Andorra" , "Iberian 4" , "country of mostly dry mountains, going by air" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
