Crossword Genius

Land with recurrent wet season (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

winter

'season' is the definition.
(winter is a season)

'land with recurrent wet' is the wordplay.
'land' becomes 'win' (both can mean to secure).
'with' says to put letters next to each other.
'recurrent' says the letters should be written in reverse (recurrent can mean turning back).
'wet' becomes 'ret' (I've seen this in other clues).
'ret' backwards is 'ter'.
'win'+'ter'='WINTER'

(Other definitions for winter that I've seen before include "Coldest season" , "'If . . . . . . comes, can spring be far behind?'" , "Cold period" , "period of discontent?" , "Time for mittens and scarves?" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
