Left in a unit entirely without support? (5)
I believe the answer is:
alone
'without support?' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'left in a unit' is the wordplay.
'left in' becomes 'al' (I've seen this in other clues).
'a unit' becomes 'one' ('one' can be a synonym of 'unit').
'al'+'one'='ALONE'
'entirely' is the link.
I am not very happy about this link. It may belong to another bit of the clue.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for alone that I've seen before include "Without anybody or anything else" , "without partner?" , "Without others present" , "On one's own" , "unique" .)
