Crossword Genius

Lift elbow to highest point (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tope

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'lift elbow' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are verbs in their base form, I can't see how they can define each other.

'highest point' is the wordplay.
'highest' becomes 'top' (I've seen this before).
'point' becomes 'e' (compass point).
'top'+'e'='TOPE'

'to' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for tope that I've seen before include "plantation?" , "Drink a lot like poet" , "Drink to excess" , "What habitual drinkers do" , "Drink heavily" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
