I believe the answer is:
sentence
'literary unit' is the definition.
'sentence' can be an answer for 'unit' (I have seen 'Unit of writing ' mean 'sentence' so perhaps 'unit' could also mean 'sentence'). I'm not certain of the 'literary' bit.
I don't understand how the rest of the clue works.
