Little growth? Time to get hairpiece (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

twig

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'little growth?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how they can define each other.

'time to get hairpiece' is the wordplay.
'time' becomes 't' (abbreviation).
'to get' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'hairpiece' becomes 'wig' (wig is a kind of hairpiece).
't'+'wig'='TWIG'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for twig that I've seen before include "Informally grasp meaning" , "Eventually grasp" , "small piece in plane, say" , "bit of stick" , "bit of wood" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
