I believe the answer is:

enrages

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'causes ire' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are verbs in their -s form, I can't understand how they can define each other.

'longest piece from returning composer' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'piece' could be 'rag' (I have seen 'Piece of cloth ' mean 'rag' so perhaps 'piece' could also mean 'rag') and 'rag' is found within the answer.
'from' could be 'e' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'e' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'nes' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for enrages that I've seen before include "Infuriates" , "Makes red" , "Angers" , "Makes furious" , "As green changes it makes one angry" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
