Crossword Genius

Loveless dance, the French twist (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tangle

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'twist' is the definition.
(I know that tangle is a type of entwine)

'loveless dance the french' is the wordplay.
'loveless dance' becomes 'tang' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'the french' becomes 'le' ('the' in French).
'tang'+'le'='TANGLE'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for tangle that I've seen before include "coarse seaweed" , "Confused situation; a seaweed" , "Mix-up" , "At glen (anag.)" , "Confused state; seaweed" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
