The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being plural nouns.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'main roads' is the wordplay.
'main' becomes 'sea' (the main is an old name for the sea).
'roads' becomes 'ways' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'sea'+'ways'='SEAWAYS'
