Makes a run to clinch the match (6)
I believe the answer is:
elopes
'makes' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both to do with motion as well as being verbs in their -s form.
Maybe you can see a link between them that I can't see?
'a run to clinch the match' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'run' could be 'lope' (lope is a kind of run) and 'lope' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'es' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Another definition for elopes that I've seen is " Runs away to get married".)
