Ross

I believe the answer is:

entrance

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'approach' is the definition.
(I know that entrance is a type of approach)

'managed church after chap' is the wordplay.
'managed' becomes 'ran' (both can mean organised or was in charge of).
'church' becomes 'CE' (abbreviation for Church of England).
'after' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'chap' becomes 'ent' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'ran'+'ce'='rance'
'rance' after 'ent' is 'ENTRANCE'.

'dismisses good' is the link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may be part of another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for entrance that I've seen before include "Capture" , "Enrapture; door" , "it's common, say, for some children to sit" , "transport" , "Opening to allow access" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
