Crossword Genius

Marshy land in inlet edges well away from ground (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

bayou

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'marshy land in inlet' is the definition.
'bayou' can be an answer for 'inlet' (I've seen this in another clue). I'm not sure about the 'marshy land in' bit.

'edges well away from ground' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'away' could be 'a' (abbreviation as used in sports fixtures) and 'a' is found in the answer.
'from' could be 'o' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'o' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'byu' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for bayou that I've seen before include "Marshy tributary of lake or river - a buoy (anag)" , "US marshland" , "Marshy place in Louisiana" , "bit of wetland in Texas, eg" , "sluggish tributary appears" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
