Crossword Genius

Mistake if Ireland abandons this African native (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

giraffe

'this african native' is the definition.
(animal native to Africa)

'mistake if ireland abandons' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'ireland' could be 'ir' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'ir' is located in the answer.
'mistake' could be 'gaffe' (gaffe is a kind of mistake) and 'gaffe' is found in the leftover letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

(Other definitions for giraffe that I've seen before include "Sixteen, mostly neck" , "Long-necked browser" , "African native ruminating" , "Large African mammal" , "Long - necked animal" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
