Crossword Genius

Much like Anson, he was an explorer (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

nansen

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'explorer' is the definition.
(I have seen 'Norwegian explorer ' mean 'nansen' so perhaps 'explorer' could also mean 'nansen')

I don't understand how the rest of the clue works.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for nansen that I've seen is " Fridtjof --, Norwegian Arctic explorer 1861-1930".)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
