Crossword Genius

Nice unmarried woman? (12)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

mademoiselle

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'nice unmarried woman?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how they can define each other.

'woman?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'woman?' could be 'demoiselle' (demoiselle is a kind of woman) and 'demoiselle' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'ma' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for mademoiselle that I've seen before include "French miss" , "Young lady" , "Foreign woman" , "Parisian girl" , "French girl; governess" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
