Northern town taxi turned towards a centre (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

bacup

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'northern town' is the definition.
I know nothing about this answer so I can't judge whether this works.

'taxi turned towards a centre' is the wordplay.
'taxi' becomes 'cab' (synonyms).
'turned' says the letters should be written backwards.
'towards' means one lot of letters go next to another (I've seen this in other clues).
'a centre' becomes 'up' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'cab' backwards is 'bac'.
'bac'+'up'='BACUP'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for bacup that I've seen is " Lancashire town".)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
