Crossword Genius

Not quite royal family (3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

kin

'family' is the definition.
(I know that family can be written as kin)

'not quite royal' is the wordplay.
'not quite' means to remove the last letter (most but not all of the word).
'royal' becomes 'king' (a king is royal).
'king' with its last letter taken off is 'KIN'.

(Other definitions for kin that I've seen before include "Relatives from Kinnegad" , "Group of relations" , "One's family/relations" , "Relations, go with kith" , "Flesh and blood" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
