Crossword Genius

Not the end of the team (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

side

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'the team' is the definition.
(both can mean a sports team)

'not the end' is the wordplay.
'not' becomes 'si' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'the' becomes 'definite article' ('the' is the definite article in English).
'end' suggests removing the centre (I've seen 'ends' mean this).
'definitearticle' with its middle removed is 'de'.
'si'+'de'='SIDE'

'of' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for side that I've seen before include "Ides (anag.)" , "[MAN U], perhaps" , "This effect is secondary" , "part" , "Left or right, say" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
