Crossword Genius

Novelist that can hold a lot of beer (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

stein

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This clue might be a double definition.

'novelist that can hold a' is the first definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how they can define each other.

'lot of beer' is the second definition.
The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe there's a link between them I don't understand?

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for stein that I've seen before include "Large earthenware beer mug" , "German tankard" , "Gertrude __, avant-garde US author, d. 1946" , "Beer-mug" , "Inset into earthenware mug for beer" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
