Crossword Genius

Number picked up by remote Scottish town (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

forfar

'scottish town' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'number picked up by remote' is the wordplay.
'number' becomes 'four' (four is a kind of whole number).
'picked up' shows a homophone (sound like).
'by remote' becomes 'far' (synonyms. I am not sure about the 'by' bit.).
'four' is a homophone of 'for'.
'for'+'far'='FORFAR'

(Other definitions for forfar that I've seen before include "Scottish town" , "Town in Angus" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
