One on hand to deal with cold weather? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

mitten

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'deal with cold weather?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how one could define the other.

'one on hand' is the wordplay.
'one' becomes 'en' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'on' says to put letters next to each other.
'hand' becomes 'mitt' ('mitt' can be a synonym of 'hand').
'en' put after 'mitt' is 'MITTEN'.

'to' is the link.

(Other definitions for mitten that I've seen before include "Fingerless glove" , "A glove with no partitions for fingers" , "Glove with no partition between fingers" , "Simple glove" , "boxing glove" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
