Originally, points for successfully finishing (5)

I believe the answer is:
newly
'originally' is the definition.
Both the answer and definition are adverbs. Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?
'points for successfully finishing' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'points' could be 'ne' (two compass points) and 'ne' is found in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
Can you help me to learn more?
(Another definition for newly that I've seen is " Freshly, very recently".)
