Crossword Genius

Paper thrown at the match (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

confetti

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'paper' is the definition.
(I know that confetti is a type of paper)

'thrown at the match' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'at' could be 'on' (location) and 'on' is present in the answer.
'the' could be 't' (the is pronounced as a 't' sound in some dialects) and 't' is found in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for confetti that I've seen before include "shower of a union?" , "Alternative to rice" , "Paper used at weddings" , "Small bits thrown over bride and groom" , "Bits thrown over newly-weds" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail and The Guardian.
