Crossword Genius

Perhaps local bank's run down by huge number of people (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

hostelry

'perhaps local' is the definition.
(hostelry can mean a pub - one's 'local')

'bank's run down by huge number of people' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'run' could be 'r' (cricket abbreviation) and 'r' is present in the answer.
'huge' could be 'os' (abbreviation for outsize) and 'os' is present in the answer.
'number' could be 'tel' (I have seen 'Small number' mean 'tel' so perhaps 'number' could also mean 'tel') and 'tel' is found in the answer.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

(Other definitions for hostelry that I've seen before include "Inn - tavern" , "Lodging house" , "Provider of accommodation" , "Old name for inn" , "Inn, pub" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
