Crossword Genius

Points out the informer (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

snout

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'the informer' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how one could define the other.

'points out' is the wordplay.
'points' becomes 'sn'.
'sn'+'out'='SNOUT'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for snout that I've seen before include "Nose, tobacco (colloq.)" , "Pig's nose" , "Nose; tobacco (slang)" , "nose of pig" , "Nose and mouth of a mammal" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
