Crossword Genius

Possibly vital source of music (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

organ

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'possibly vital source' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps there's a link between them I don't understand?

'of music' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'of' could be 'o' and 'o' is present in the answer.
'music' could be 'g' and 'g' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'ran' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for organ that I've seen before include "Large musical instrument often heard in church" , "ear maybe" , "Musical instrument - pancreas, perhaps" , "Body part - wind instrument" , "specialist magazine" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
