Prepares space for game of golf in grounds (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

grooms

'prepares' is the definition.
('groom' can be a synonym of 'prepare')

'space for game of golf in grounds' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'space' could be 'room' (enough space or room to do something) and 'room' is located in the answer.
'golf' could be 'g' (phonetic alphabet: alpha, bravo, charlie etc.) and 'g' is present in the answer.
A single letter 's' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Other definitions for grooms that I've seen before include "Horse-tenders" , "Potential husbands" , "chaps getting a ring" , "Neatens; husbands to be" , "Stable-hands" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
