Crossword Genius

Primates back charge for divorce (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

separate

'divorce' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'primates back charge' is the wordplay.
'primates' becomes 'apes' (ape is a kind of primate).
'back' shows that the letters should be reversed in order.
'charge' becomes 'rate' (rate is a kind of charge**).
'apes' written backwards gives 'sepa'.
'sepa'+'rate'='SEPARATE'

'for' is the link.

(Other definitions for separate that I've seen before include "Distinct, not joined" , "Split" , "Divide, part" , "Divide, keep apart" , "Different, distinct" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
