Crossword Genius

Putting it up near the arena is wearisome (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tiring

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'wearisome' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'putting it up near' is the wordplay.
'putting' becomes 'ring' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should believe this answer much more).
'up' is a reversal indicator (in down clue: letters go upwards).
'near' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'it' reversed gives 'ti'.
'ring' after 'ti' is 'TIRING'.

'the arena is' is the link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may be part of another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for tiring that I've seen before include "Growing weary or bored" , "Becoming sleepy" , "Causing weariness" , "Wearying, exhausting" , "Boring" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Independent.
